The kids LOVED helping pick out supplies at The Home Depot.
They were running around all over the garden center in our Home Depot store grabbing everything and anything they thought was cool looking. Miss Thang kept picking out tropicals, which are some of my favorites too but they just won’t last outdoors in the Oklahoma heat and droughts. If we would’ve left it up to the kids we would’ve brought home practically the whole garden center! 🙂
We had a blast building our Butterfly Island! It was so fun to #DigIn to a project!
For some reason both Mr Right and I really thought it was going to take several hours to completely build the Butterfly Island.
Not at all. It took us an hour and a half maybe. We did cut corners by using weed block paper instead of digging out the ground where we planned to put it. Our yard is pretty level so for us the only benefit of digging the ground out was the weeds & grass popping up. That’s easily fixed with weed block paper. Plus the fact that our yard is extremely rocky and Mr. Right didn’t want to have to get the pick axe out and use it.
We started setting the blocks around where we thought we wanted the Butterfly Island to be, then tweaked it until we had it where we wanted it. After that we laid the weed block down, arranged all the wall blocks over the top of it, poured in the Miracle Gro Garden Soil. Then I took the time to place all the flowers we had bought and move them around a bit to see how I wanted them to be arranged.
We have ZERO tress and wind blocks on our 2.5 acres so I only bought one really tall flower and just a few days after planting I saw I needed a small stake to help support the base. The flowers getting beat by the wind was also the reason we decided to put the Butterfly Island so close to the house instead of out in the yard more.
